So when 2am came, I got on a train to the other side of town, without a ticket of course. When I navigated my way to the back lanes, I heard people talking and laughing. As I followed the sound, the source of the laughter came into view. Olivia was right! There were bread rolls, soup and clean water! But as I approached the table, everyone stopped eating and talking and stared at me, like I was some kind of alien. Suddenly, the table of kids erupted with shouting and insults, but just as I was about to run away, Aarek screamed: “EVERYONE CAN BLUMMIN’ WELL SHUT UP, OR YOU CAN ALL SCRAM, WITH NO FOOD WHATSOEVER!” I watched him step forward out of the shadows, my eyes fixed on him, confused. With a warm grin on his face, pulled a roll out of his pocket and held it out to me. “Sorry about them Alya!” he grumbled as he shot the others a number of dirty looks. “Have some bread! There’s tons to go around.” he said in a sweet, thoughtful tone. Before he could blink, I was devouring the roll like it was the first time I’d seen food my life, and that was what it felt like. I was starving. This was the nicest Aarek had ever been to me. I remember the first time I had come to the sewer, him and his posse had beat me up so much that I thought of going home, if I could even call it that. But I decided to stay in the sewer, figuring that I’d rather be here than be neglected by my parents. “Where did you get this?” I exclaimed through a mouthful of bread.
“A friend of mine” Aarek said, with a sheepish grin on his face. Suddenly, my vision went hazy and I fell to the ground. I must have hit my head because it was throbbing like a bass drum. But through my half sleepy state I heard Aarek say, “He’s just dying to meet you, Alya!” He teased along with menacing laughter, which was probably closer to cackling than laughing, as if this was all some sort of joke. I should have known not to trust Aarek! But before I could continue my silent rampage, my thoughts blurred and everything went dark.
I woke up to the ferocity of fluorescent light. As the memories of the past couple of hours, days or weeks, or however long I had been out came back to me, I realised that Aarek and Olivia must have been involved in my capture! I felt anger rising up like a fire inside me. Anger that made me hate Olivia, for what she did. I trusted her and she made me come! She insisted! I felt ashamed and embarrassed for my temporary trust of Aarek with his phony smile and giving me the drugged bread. I started to kick and scream out my anger but I was strapped to what looked to be a stainless steel table. My ankles, wrists and torso was restrained. Over my rage, I heard the door slam behind someone wanting to be heard. As the male figure got to the table, he unstrapped my torso and wrists so I could sit up. I examined my surroundings. Snow white walls with a brilliant marble floor with white desks, white computers and white everything apart from the stainless steel table I was lying on, which had multiple dents, showing past use, unless it was all me, but I highly doubted it.
As I examined the man who had unbuckled me, I realised he looked a lot like Olivia. He had long brown hair, like mine, but with Olivia’s brilliant green eyes. “Sorry we had to meet in this way Alya. My name is Fornax. I know about your dreams; I know almost everything there is to know about you! Aarek has proven very useful since you left your parents, but do not be afraid. I am here to help! Ha! As if strapping me to a table and kidnapping me against my will was helping me! He acted like he was some kind of bloody hero! “Look, you may be ‘here to help’ but I think all this get up is taking it a little too far. Just let me go! I want to see Olivia again! I don’t want your stupid help!” I exclaimed, realising that a tear was running down the corner of my eye and running into the crook of my nose. Great.
“Look, I can help you. If you help me I can rid you of those awful dreams forever! Now, come with me and I’ll introduce you to the others.”
Who did this guy think he was? Some kind of child kidnapper superman of mystery? All I wanted was answers and a clear explanation. I opened my mouth in protest, but I was being dragged by the sleeve down some elaborate hall, full of deep colours and marble statues. What was this?
